Let me start by saying Ronan did incredible. Yes, there were moments of terror but they were very few and far between. We could not have asked for a better traveler. We only stopped twice each day and he slept the majority of the time.
We did an overnight stay in Shasta Lake which just happens to be halfway and where we met friends and had a great evening. The next morning we took a walk, got in an am nap and even a dip in the pool before we hit the road again. I think it was good to break it up a little for him.
Some tips that I think helped us all keep our sanity intact:
- Left around a nap time with a full bellied baby.
-Drove until baby allowed...
- Packed a cooler of drinks, snacks, and meal fixin's for adults so we wouldn't make any extra stops.
- WIDE array of toys and books packed in baskets that I could reach and interact with Ronan. Some new and exciting, some comforting standbys.
- Stopped at Rest Stops so dog could run around and be fed and it provided good nursing environment. Shaded, grassy areas and picnic tables. Then we stopped for gas at next exit.
- Used Iphone apps such as Iexit and Rest Stop finder - was fantastic for planning stops! How did we survive before smart phones?
- Earth's Best solids pouches with disposable bibs for meal times.
-Caffeine.
-Baby Einstein videos for times of desperation (we have a zero screen time baby so this was extra exciting).
-Womb bear app on iphone to help soothe fussy baby to sleep.
